Common symptoms
- Pull cord pulls but the engine never fires
- Fires briefly, then dies
- Pull cord is hard to pull or locked
- Starts only with the choke on
- Smoke, backfiring, or strong fuel smell when trying to start
Possible causes
- Old or contaminated fuel — the most common cause by far
- Varnished or clogged carburetor
- Fouled or worn spark plug
- Dirty air filter, especially in dusty New Mexico conditions
- Safety interlock (blade brake, seat switch, or handle bail) not engaged
- Internal problems such as low compression
Safe things you can check
Disconnect the spark plug wire before touching blades or moving parts.
- Drain old fuel and refill with fresh gasoline
- Check the oil level
- Inspect the spark plug and replace if it's dark, wet, or worn
- Clean or replace the air filter
- Confirm all safety switches and handles are engaged
When professional repair makes sense
Call for help if it still won't start with fresh fuel and a new plug, if the pull cord is locked, if fuel leaks from the carburetor, or if you hear knocking or grinding. Never spray starting fluid repeatedly or remove safety devices to get an engine running.
